Our Trip: In Triple Metaphor

Sailing this sleek, silver ship

o'er waves of green and scrub-oak hue

(the swells are mustard-capped, not blue),

we give our faces to the wind...

our cheeks to sea spray...

and our sails to freedom.

Footloose and fancy-free are we,

two skimming on a sometimes peaceful sea,

old mates who've weathered

storm and tide,

with sea legs, rope burns, and

no need to hide.

As ever, he is just across my shoulder,

blue jeans faded over knees

that still do please me,

like the square and sturdy hand

that wraps up mine.

The breathing next to him is easy now,

which means we talk or don't talk,

laugh or don't laugh,

fight or don't fight,

bend but don't break that sweet rhythm––

ours for now and ever––

earned and learned

(purchased, perhaps)

or begged and borrowed, maybe......

Sailing on life's shifting,

shining sea.

Oh Sue, this was such a sweet way of chronicling your drive with your sweetie. The scenery is stunning. It's still brown here.
I love that the older we get the more we can just appreciate those trips side by side...without having to talk...or fight. :)

I love the tale told by the feet picture--DC and water, shorts and crocs.
And the sentiment . . . breathing easy. We're heading there.

i adore the picture of both of your feet on the coffee table. or trunk. it kind of looks like it's fashioned after a trunk. i love it more if it's a real trunk. but i still love it if it isn't. some of my favorite memories were our car rides with just sean and i to and from rexburg and salt lake city when we were going to school at byu idaho. so much great talking and great silence...and car dancing, lol.

I love the music you had to go with this post, love ben folds anyway- but this one was perfect to go with the pics and your poem. I love the comfortable silences and the just being.

I love that!!! That was absolutely beautiful. So well written and evocative. Every Saturday, Mormon Mommy Blogs has a feature where you can put up your best post of the week. I hope you'll post that. It was beautiful.

It is really wonderful to see a marriage that is so solid and stable. I loved the part about "learned and earned." It's also great to see a woman who is so in love with her husband.

That was so beauiful, Sue! Brought tears to my eyes. It describes how I feel - EXACTLY - about life with my own sweet husband. We have a good rhythm together, and so, it seems, do the two of you. I'm getting quite fond of you.

What wonderful inspiration, and gorgeous scenery I might add. So great that you could actually be alone with the Bishop for that long a period. One day when you are old, you will have lots of time to be with each other. I couldn't wish a better wish for you both.
