A Mother's Day Note to My Children

We always thank our mothers on Mother's Day, but it occurred to me this morning that our children deserve a bit of recognition themselves. After all, they are the ones who make us the mothers we are, right?

That's why I wanted to take a minute and thank my children for the uncomplicated way in which I am able to enjoy Mother's Day. This day dedicated to moms is never bittersweet for me, a happy circumstance that I can attribute directly to the people I raised (and who raised me, by the way, as I grew into this complicated role that is so important to all of us). They have consistently made me feel good about myself as a mother, not just by their love and respect but by the lives they lead.

Don't get me wrong. My children would be the first to admit that I am a far from perfect mother. In fact, they find nothing more amusing than to expound upon my various foibles, punctuating each other's stories and recollections with bursts of laughter and shared glee. Usually, I find myself chuckling right along with them, and there is a reason that I am able to do so. The reason is them. They are the ones whose unconditional love and acceptance make me feel secure about myself as a mother. I am known and understood by my very generous children in all my (not always so glorious) glory. I feel honored and respected, despite the many flaws and imperfections that have not escaped their notice. I have the privilege of being aware that they are glad Heavenly Father gave them to me, and that I am the mother they would choose all over again, if such a choice were possible.

Along with the husband who gave them to me, these people are the greatest blessings in my life. They have brought and continue to bring me more joy and pleasure than I could ever express. That's why I want to take a moment on this Friday before Mother's Day to thank them for everything they are to me...and for all the love and goodness they brought with them when they came into my world.

Being a mother is my favorite thing, period. And I only have that job because of Matt, Karin, Ryan, and Todd.

So thanks, guys. You've made me the person I am today...a proud and happy mom.

great perspective twist.
Maybe I'll take time to thank my brood . . . if I can get them to stop fighting long enough . . . .;)

That's Jen, by the way. Didn't realize Heidi was logged on.

I love this post. So touching. I always think of my son Brighton on Mother's day, as he was born only a few days before my first Mother's day. I think of his birthday as mother's day because that's the day I officially became a mother.

Happy Mother's Day!

This is so beautiful Sue. I hope someday to be the Mom you are. I know you deserve all the love and respect you can get!
Mother's Day has always been bittersweet for me...but not anymore...I am more aware that I need to be grateful for the children God gave me....who made me a Mom!
