Having said that, the plot was entertaining, the movie beautiful to look at (a compelling and convincing 19th century London), the characters likable, the soundtrack superb, and a sequel has clearly been set in motion, one which we will be sure to view when the time comes.
As an actor, Robert Downey Jr. gets better and better (I continue to be impressed with his hard-won sobriety), and Jude Law shines pretty brightly himself as an uncharacteristically dashing version of Dr. Watson, the famous sidekick. Downey has even been nominated for the Golden Globes award as best actor, while the score boasts a critic's choice award nomination.
Both nominees are deserving. And the production design ain't bad either.
At any rate, Sherlock Holmes was definitely a fun ride, with enough action for my boys and enough wit for me. Hope you get a chance to catch it!

Thanks for the review Sue. We have set dates to watch that movie since Christmas, but we've been caught up with doing volunteer work and stuff for church. It's been busy, busy.
Hopefully tonight, we will get time to see it as a family. I've heard mixed reviews from friends, but I like Robert Downey Jr and think he is a great actor who turned his life around. Everyone loves the come back story = )
May
love both of those actors. have you seen "home for the holidays?" i know i've talked about it before. we watch it on thanksgiving every year. it's with robert downey jr. so funny.
I have never even heard of this one! I'm on a roll since seeing Blindside so perhaps this one should be next. Thanks Sue.
Brad and I had mixed feelings about this film. I always love RD, jr., but I found that I struggled to understand many lines--mumbling, commotion, etc.
I did think it was clever and action-packed. And the banter between Holmes and Watson was clever. But I had a hard time believing him to be a cage fighter :)
I am so glad you reviewed it for us. I have been wanting to see it for the longest time! It was supposed to come out in September and I was so disappointed when it didn't, but am happy now, because it is out! Can't wait to see it, and I am so glad it is good and not another dud from a great story!
We saw it the other day and I liked it too. I always like it when the occult is revealed as trickery. And I too, admire RDJs acting and sobriety. have you seen him in 'Only You'? He's adorable.
I'm glad to find you enjoyed it. We vegged out this past weekend on TCM's Sherlock Home series. Even though Downey has his problems, I do like him. I wonder if he'd be a better/worse actor if he was sober/clean?
Thanks for the review! This is one we wanted to see, so it's nice you gave it a many-thumbs up.
Me too! Great review! I really enjoyed it.
Molly- I think he's been sober for about five years, actually. And I think he's a good actor either way, but probably not that good to work with when he's using. As I recall, he used to be in and out of jail all the time.
Movie review, sharing is caring, thank you!
Wishing you family a great new year ahead!
Best!
