For Princesses Only, Please!

Saturday Centus is here again, and Jenny has decided to follow up last week's cropped photo prompt with the complete picture. In the first version, I interpreted the bottom half of the photo as a little girl playing dress-up and had some fun with it. But looking at the complete photo this week brought something else to the surface for me.

∞§∞

Kindergarten is now in her past,
and this graduate’s having a blast.
But those heels mar my bliss.
It seems this little miss
may be trying to grow up too fast!

Some will think my concern overdone.
After all, she’s just having some fun.
But real shoes or pretend,
dressing older’s a trend.
Tots aren’t teens. Are we jumping the gun?

∞§∞

Am I just being old-fashioned here?
In my day, every girl worth her salt tried on Mom's shoes.
But we didn't wear them to graduation.
Nor could we purchase mini versions of our own.
You see, the shoe stores didn't make them in our size.
Only toy stores did...for princesses only, of course.
(And even then, it was just a kitten heel.)

Amen. I agree. The kids these days are growing up way too fast.

It amazes me how you just whip out these cute rhymes! Many mothers seem to be trying to make their little daughters grow up too fast. My granddaughter, Laurel, has already been in a movie and several commercials and she's not even 13. The last time I saw her in 2010, we were having a meal with our son and his ex-wife's parents. Laurel was going on a photo shoot the following day, and her other grandmother told her, " Now be sure to look sexy!!" It made me sick to hear her say that to a little girl who was not quite 11 years old. What are these people thinking??????

Great poem, Sue. I certainly do agree with you about little kids wanting to be "sexy". I hate the shoes that they wear to church. The heels are way to high for them, and they actually fit!! Also feel the same way about how some mother's let them dress. Why do they want these darling little ones to grow up so fast? I think it is disgusting when they want to mimic their older teenagers, who in my opinion want to be too
"sexy" as well.

I'd say a lot of people are jumping the gun. Sometimes when I see children in their clothes, I can't believe parent's buy that stuff for their little ones. Good take on the prompt.

i think we do jump the gun...kids are growing up way too fast and have access to far too much too fast...

I so hear you Sue. You said it very well! I also agree with your Mom that it's disgusting. I always enjoy reading her take on things. She does not mince words.

I think this problem is not only because of the availability of inappropriate styles, and the making of money for company's, but mostly because parents these days don't know the word NO.
The inmates are running the asylum.

I agree wholeheartedly! Kids need time to be kids. They have a long time to be grownups. Why rush it!

Oh Sue, this is so true. Looking at the dresses they have for little girls it looks just like what Mom's are wearing. Mom's need to slow down a bit on this one and just enjoy the moments of little girls.
Thanks for the thoughts today!

ugh...while this seems innocent enough, it's not much of a stretch to be buying your 5 year old thong panties and other things that are not age appropriate. I can't stand the over-sexualization of our young people these days. It just keeps getting worse and worse. ugh. Nicely done, Sue.

I believe our kids are growing up too fast. But, maybe that's just this 'old fogey's' opinion!
I wish our kids could stay younger, longer.
You hilt the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned!

Parents should not use their children to make themselves feel better. And honestly, I think that's what dressing little girls like Barbie is what it's all about.

First off you need to teach a poetry writing class. Love it!

Secondly, as a mum of an almost 6-year old, kides grow up way too fast. Let them be kids!

I still like those heels.

I didn't know they made those! (I think I love being a boy-mama even more than before now.)

I think mothers need to slow down. My own daughter painted my granddaughter's toe nails before she was even one year old. After I told her that nail polish contained hazardous chemicals such - toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and formaldehyde, she stopped doing it.

What is wrong with letting little girls just be little girls? After they have grown up that can never be captured again.I am against children wearing high heels!~Ames

Kids want to look older...Moms want to look younger..and they both look silly when they meet in the middle. Adults need to let children hold on to their childhood. It goes too fast as it is. I've seen enough 12 and 13yr olds in the maternity ward to make me sick. Looking sexy at 6 or 10 is ridiculous and hazardous.

For just a second I thought that was Carli and I was wondering if Heather was going to get mad at your poem. Then I remembered that Carli is older than that, and so now I can say honestly that I don't like little girls to grow up too fast either. They are so precious and sweet (been surrounded by it since yesterday!) and I hate to see that stage go by too quickly. But I will email you the funniest thing that happened - in all innocence. Katie and I couldn't stop laughing.

Sue, obviously I agree. I was shocked when Jenny said this little girl was graduating kindergarten. What are they thinking? I'm convinced that you can turn anything into a good poem. laurie

Amen to you! Why must our world grow up our little girls so fast?!! I only have one and I am determined to not let her grow up too fast.

Graduation for little ones like that don't happen in the UK yet but I fear it won't be long. I find it uncomfortable viewing even when they are 11yrs old.

My attempt was very late being posted this time but it is here if you have a minute

NOT at all are you being old fashioned! It's actually a safety concern as well--those heels are crazy!!
AND, Gil and I had to order special the girl's bathing suits this year because even the ones at Target were way too sassy. For 5 and 6 years olds!

I'm not sure what's going on but I'm all about keeping my kids, kids. Aside from (for fun) painting their nails sometimes (which, I was raised that was taboo) I am super carful about how I dress them.

Typo--I meant "careful"

JUST had this discussion in the second hand store with my 9 year old, "NO WAY! Put those back! You are NOT wearing those shoes yet!!" Then she wanted them for play, and I didn't want to spend the money on them for that either! :) Actually, I was a bit worried she might break her ankle even in play. I worry for myself sometimes. :)

Judie's comment made me feel kind of ill.

This little poem embodies my sentiments exactly.
