Whenever I Think of 9/11...

Whenever I think of 9/11, I think of the firefighters

Brave men who did their jobs under the worst possible conditions

Men who showed up for work because the city they loved needed them

Who knew full well they were putting their lives on the line

Lives they were willing to forfeit to save the lives of others

From a disaster of previously unimaginable proportions

On a day eclipsed by horror and ennobled by courage

A day where entire fire stations were all but decimated

And too many good men were lost.

Whenever I think of 9/11, I think of the firefighters.

And their families.

And all of the people they saved...and couldn't save.

May God bless them, every one.

My dad was a firefighter (though not in NYC). I appreciate your words so much.

I cried throughout the reading of this, Sue. It does take a lof of bravery to become a firefighter, and to think that three of my grandchildren are now firefighters. I worry about them (who would I be if I didn't worry, right?) occaisionally. Especially when we have so many forest fires around here. But they are doing what they want to do and so were the New York City firemen. I am hoping that Dick will take me to Cathedral City tonight when it is dark to view a special memorial one couple has put up on their roof. They have built 17 foot replicas of the twin towers out of aluminum and they are all lighted. It should be memorable. They are also showing videos that he has taken of the progression of the sight from when it was first destroyed until now. He goes back there every year, so it should be very interesting. I'm glad you did this. We all need to stop and really remember!

Love, Mom

I'll never forget that image of the men carrying their dead fire chief through the streets.
But will our children remember the lessons taught that day? I wonder.
