Blast from the Past

Okay. For those of you who perused yesterday's post, this is the photo my mom requested (in her comment) that I publish today. I'm not sure why, given the ugly shirt and the fact that I'm not even looking at the camera, but it's her favorite one of me as a young woman. I was attending the University of Utah at the time and studying for something or other. Can't imagine who snapped the picture. Must have been my hubby (then boyfriend) or roommate, I guess. Pretty glamorous, eh?

This one is in response to Jill's comment asking if I would post some photos of myself as a young mother "with all my kids around me." It hangs on my photo wall, and since I was too lazy to take it out of the frame and scan it, this is a picture of that picture, cropped rather carelessly. But you get the idea, right? Cute kids!

Here are a couple of faded but favorite photos from our picture book. Why must these old pics always turn yellow? (That's a rhetorical question, by the way, so please spare me the chemical details!) The first one was taken in front of my in-laws' summer home in Rancho Mirage. The second was in front of our old house in Southern California, just before my sister's wedding reception. Weren't the little guys cute in their suspenders?

And finally, here is the lovely (?) pic that hung on the wall of our church building for more than a few years. They happened to catch Matt in his dreaded dreadlock phase, so I thought you might get a kick out of it. (We were highly amused at the time, as you might imagine...)

Okay, that's enough self-revelation to last clear into next year. You can thank Jen (or not) for getting me started. Or maybe you should blame it all on my mom!

    Thanks for posting these pictures, Sue. I can see why your mom loves that picture. Your family is beautiful, and I do love the suspenders. I made the boys wear them at our wedding.

    Even through all of the styles and phases, questionable as they me be, you can see that you are a happy family. This reminds me that I need to have family pictures made-asap!

    I LOVE photo journeys through time! I could spend hours looking through other people's scrapbooks. I know--weirdo I am.

    I love that your family looks genuinely happy in the pictures. Like you really might actually enjoy being with each other. :0) A treasure indeed...

    Thanks Sue. I'm glad you posted those pictures. I don't understand what is on your right cheek in my favorite picture of you. My copy shows your skin absolutely free of any blemish. Your skin was so smooth, even then.

    And I'm afraid you remember my college skin a little too fondly. Actually, it was in those four years that I was more prone to pimples than at any other time in my life! (I think the water and dryness in Utah didn't agree with me.)

    I can see why your Mom loves that first photo..it's your youth, your intensity, your college experience..I bet she sees you that way in her heart everyday. Lovely family too! Time, like that song says, is an hour glass glued to the table..can't stop it, but it can be captured and fondly remembered in pics.

    I wonder if you know what a difference you made in my life, Janis. Having a responsible teenager I could trust just down the street made my life as a stay-at-home mom so much easier.

    This was one of my favorite posts ever. SO FUN seeing your young little family. The same styles, etc when I was raising my sons, in that same era of course. I feel like I should have known you back then.

    I love these old pictures. How fun to look at!

    Pictures like this are the reason I think every woman should be ok with having her picture taken. I HATE when people say, "Don't take my picture, I look too..."

    I love mothers. It is fun to see people through their mothers eyes.
    I also love pictures of your past family. Makes me want to search for mine. One of these days I'll get my old photos out and reminisce.

    I really enjoyed seeing those pictures - your family has so much fun together and it shows in those pictures. I especially enjoyed Matt's dreads - we all have a style in our past that is particularly heinous. I, in fact, have several horrible hairstyles throughout the ages. I can see why the first pic is a favorite of your mom's - it's very sweet and intense all at the same time.

    Great pictures - They definately made me smile! I loved going down memory lane here with you - the hairstyles - I think you are sporting a bit of Carol Brady (hee hee) and the clothes are always fun to look at too!!

    I loved the pictures of your family through the years. You are in my era for sure. I love your flair for writing.
    When my husband and I got married his Father was the photographer. He had worked in the church audio visual department for a number of years. He didn't mention he was going to do the pictures in black and white. We did get a few colored photo's taken by others. The only good picture of my husband and I was a picture that took a little part of my husband's head off. Several years ago I had a photographer redo the photo and it turned out great. The color ones have faded.

    Thank you for sharing these with us. They are lovely. It's really neat to see you with your children when they were young. I always say if there is a fire coming, I don't want anything but the pictures. I guess nowadays that would mean we'd have to grab the computer! ;)
