I was only 16 when when I met my husband. In all his Chicago coolness, he asked me to dance at one of the first fraternity-sorority exchanges of our freshman year, and I said yes. (It wasn't a hard decision.) We hung out for the rest of the night, but we weren't an item until our paths crossed again at a Valentine's party. His date was going to meet him later, and I became the beneficiary of her tardiness. By the time she arrived, any chance of them spending that (or any other) evening together was loooong gone.
Those golden days of Spring pretty much belonged to us that year. We were together every day, and I was as smitten as smitten gets. It was the spring of 1969, and I would wake up to the strains of "Love Can Make You Happy" by Mercy, certain that every note was sung for me. I'm always amazed how music can zap you back to a certain place or time and make you feel as if you'd never left it. This song does exactly that for me...which is why I'm so fond of listening.
(I hope you're enjoying listening to it, too.)
Wake up in the morning with the sunshine in your eyes,
and the smell of flowers blooming fills the air.
Your mind is filled with the thoughts of a certain someone that you love;
your life is filled with joy when (s)he is there.
Love can make you happy, if you find someone who cares
to give a lifetime to you, and who has a love to share.
–Jack Sigler Jr. (Love Can Make You Happy, sung by Mercy)

Awesome! I wonder if Dave's late date ever figured out what her tardiness truly cost her. Oh well. So glad that you were the beneficiary and that he was smart enough to know what he had!

awww...how beautiful...i hope you are having a most wonderful valentines day!
Wait!! You were a freshman in college at 16???!! Wow. So how old were you when you got married? And I am also wondering how your parents felt about you finding your true love at such a young age. (Can you tell I have daughters that same age?:-) Personally, I don't think I would have taken it very well.
On the flip side. It sounds very romantic from your point of view!! Thanks for sharing your story.
Your story is sweet like good sugar cookies on Valentine's Day (or any day for that matter). I hope it continues to be so.
In answer to your question, Joy, we got married when I was 20 and he was 22. (We had both graduated from college by then, and my parents felt good about it.)
=)
You were such a young little Valentine! Such a sweet story - Happy Valentine's Day to you both!
Isn't it great how songs can take us back to moments of our lives that we treasure!? What a fun story!! My parents were married during the Blizzard (New England) of 69. Sounds like it was a great year for love! :)
Your sweet love story is fantastic! I hope you both had the most wonderful day.
What a rich story. Except for the part about stomping on that poor tardy woman's heart.
Ah! What a sweet story! I love hearing how people fell in love. Beautiful! And his poor date :)
