Tree of Hearts


Tree of Hearts

I'd like to be a tall heart tree,
with branches made to bear . . .

strong and firm and heavy-laden,
blessed with fruit to spare.

I'd like to offer nourishment
to all who stand in need

of food and shade and shelter, shaped
from fertile, hope-filled seed.

Sometimes my leaves are green and bright,
my harvest juicy sweet...

but other times, my leaves are dull,
my bounty incomplete.

It's up to me to face the sun
and drink the water clear...

to sink my roots into firm ground
and prosper, year by year.

If I would be a tall heart tree
with branches made to bear,

then I must tend and water well
the earth from which I share.

Will I be someone the Lord can count on
when He needs an extra pair of hands?

    On Sunday the High Council speaker talked about the parable of the fig tree that bore no fruit..it looked healthy, but no figs..I often wonder if I'm like that tree that seems to have it all together, but the fruit is lacking...your lovely poem reminded me of that...

    LeAnn is right. You just need to get some of these neat poems together and send them to your editor at Deseret Books. It is nice to have all your poetry on your poetry site,but it is better to have an actual book that you can take from room to room to read whenever the mood strikes. Yes, you can always go online and read them, but it just isn't the same. LeAnn isn't the only one that has mentioned this. Many people would love to have such a book. It seems like we are getting a new poem almost daily and I wouldn't be surprised if you have been writing even more. You are very prolific and I am glad you are. I know you don't like it much when I go on about how talented you are, but darn it, I just know this is a book that needs to be published.

    Incidentally, I did like the poem. There is a truth there for all of us.

    The trees are adorable and the thoughts inspirational (especially love the heart trees). At this time of year I am loving the trees all around with each beautiful little green leaf!

    "only if I am willing to offer them" is right...I've been thinking about this lots lately. I can have the best intentions, but unless I extend myself, it's not going to happen. Beautiful poem.
