The Art of Making Friends

Sometimes making friends is kinda scary...
and we need a little nudge.

(Especially when the subject's kinda hairy,
and he doesn't want to budge.)

But if we're lucky, someone comes to show us
how to wipe away our fear;

And if we let a new friend come to know us...
bits of magic might appear.

(Isn't he dear?)

  2. How sweet, Sue! Horses are so big and can be so scary! It looks like things went without a hitch!

  3. The kids are dear....the horses, not so much.
I grew up around horses. I always found that once they knew they were bigger then you and there was nothing you could do about it, they got mean. They have such personalities. They can be very scary...even unintentionally.

  4. I needed this post today Sue. It seems all of the friends I try to make are kinda hairy, and don't want to budge.

    Charming children!

  9. We had horses when I was a kid. It was so much fun but you're right…when you're small, they can be kind of intimidating.

    Stumbled here through cjane's post...

  10. I don't know what I love more - the kids or the horses (apologies to Heather). I've had some horses that were really good friends, and took good care of me in some scarey situations. They are big, yes, but I love them. The one lesson I taught my kids was to feed them flat handed. If little fingers are sticking up, sometimes the horse thinks they're part of the snack - ouch!

  11. The pictures are SO cute! And I love how you turned it into a poem!

  12. I really don't know how you can do it Sue. The way you can turn a few pictures into a poem. It really does make a story out of the situation and I can understand Heather when she mentions that you capture exactly what she is trying to show.

Dick thinks you are wildly unappreciated by the literary community in America. Your name should be known by everyone. Incidentally, I do agree with him. Your talent is so rounded. You can write about anything, be it serious or funny. It's just a shame that more people aren't aware of you and your talent.

  13. Mom,

    You are SUCH a mom!

    xo,
    Sue

PS. If it's any comfort to you in your dismay over my shocking lack of worldwide fame (heehee), I have no ambition to become a vaunted member of the literary community. I just like to be heard! (And having observed who my "listener" was as I grew up, now everyone who reads this knows why...) Who wouldn't like to be heard when their first experience of communication takes place with a mom as wholeheartedly and unconditionally validating as you? I am a lucky girl!

PPS. As for this little rhyme, you could have easily done the same yourself. In fact, maybe you should do a guest post so my readers can see where this little rhyming trick came from...!

  14. Love - love - love your post. Grandkids are always gorgeous. Sue, you are so right. I remember several notes of "prose" from your Mom when I was younger. Definitely in the genes!!

  15. Your grandkids are so adorable. And I love the poem. And the animals. But I am biased because my grandparents had a small farm filled with all kinds of farm animals when I was a child.
    Wonderful memories!!

  17. I love it! Great lesson. This line is my favorite: "specially when the subject's kinda hairy,
and he doesn't want to budge"
I've never really liked poetry all that much but you are slowing bringing me around!

  18. Oh yes, he does look very dear, but then I have a soft spot for little boys. His sister is pretty darn cute too!

  19. (Have to agree, Jill. Carli is a cutie, too!)

Not that I'm prejudiced, or anything...
