The Tree in Me

©2016 Susan Noyes Anderson

Plant all my roots in rich brown earth
and stretch my branches wide.
Let golden rays of morning sun
fill every space inside.

Surround my leaves with bright blue sky
and float me on a cloud.
Set free the seeking soul in me;
remove the bleary shroud.

Make of my spirit something grand.
Expand the light I see.
Open my eyes to sacred gifts
that lie fallow in me.

Raise up new growth on mountain tops;
spread seeds from crest to crest.
Help me to claim and cultivate
the ground my heart loves best.

  3. What a lovely metaphor! There are definitely parallels between humans & trees.

  4. I think we all have a bit of tree inside, perhaps the difference is the type of tree we might be. I think a weeping willow resides in me. Your poem is lovely and a reminder of of the balance between human and nature.

  5. What a lovely intermingling - eloquently rendered - of tree qualities and an inner transcendence. Not exactly a metaphor - well, at least not strictly speaking - but a very interesting and unique approach and perspective. I think this is an awesome piece of writing!

  11. I cried.

    It was as if you reached into my heart and felt the shadows and what I needed. This is something we should all strive to do, to feel, to be.

    Thank you.

  13. I read this as you knowing you have lots inside to share, to give, to create. You have faith it is there, just as a tree that is cared for will live well and give such beauty. You have much beauty within Sue. This one flows so sweetly, like a song.

  17. Help me to claim and cultivate
    the ground my heart loves best

    One craves and clamours for all of the goodness in life. One gets to acquire them in parts as many just fizzle away sometimes!

  19. Such a lovely poem that reminds me of family and roots and the love that's there. I don't know if that's the poem's intention but it brought out those thoughts to me. Have a wonderful Christmas Sue..give hugs to your Mom if you see her.
