Away and away to the black-bottomed sea
sailed her man on a whim and a wave.
"No creature above or below escapes me!"
was the promise his blushing bride gave.
Harpoon in hand, she stood vigil by day
and by night cast a net in her dreams.
Her veil was the mist, trimmed in fine ocean spray,
and her tears ran in saltwater streams.

Gorgeous. Funnily enough I’d just left a comment on Irene’s to the effect that the whte dress in her poem suddenly made me think of a wedding dress - why hadn’t I seen it before?. You convey this beautifully.
ReplyDeleteLove your second verse! This is lovely.
ReplyDeleteLove the rhymes and images. Reads so beautifully.
ReplyDeleteWow, so many contrasts here.
ReplyDeleteWow! In company of such a creation, I am speechless.
ReplyDeleteThis poem makes me feel like you nknow the life of a nineteenth century whaler. A hard life for the man and the woman.
ReplyDeleteI love the flow of the rhymes!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, romantic, sad - perfect. My great grandfather was lost at sea, leaving a pregnant wife and two tiny girls. I think this poem has something of the flavour of what I imagine their relationship might have been like.
ReplyDeletethe thoughts you echo justify the effect of this pic. Immensely enjoyed it!
ReplyDelete. Her veil was the mist, trimmed in fine ocean spray, and her tears ran in saltwater streams. that is a beautiful image that evokes loss.
ReplyDeleteI like the traditional feel here...like an old song...
ReplyDeleteNow, that is a "classic" treatment of that photo. It has an old school feel in a new presentation. A special piece, Susan!
ReplyDeleteI loved the photo and of course, I always enjoy your poetry. This was one to heighten my imagination. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI really hope she snares that treacherous man... I like the feeling of a song ..
ReplyDeleteDumb man! Doesn't he know what he has waiting for him on the shore!
ReplyDeleteI've often thought I would not be a good sailor or sailor's wife...don't even want to go on a cruise... beautiful words, dear Sue
ReplyDeleteBeautiful portray!
