We the People
Glory Days: A 4th of July Poem

Declaration of Independence.
Pilgrims' feet, well-planted.
Heritage and brave forefathers:
all taken for granted.

Continental Congress,
Articles, Confederation.
Patrick Henry, Paul Revere:
heroes of our nation.

Words forgotten in a breath:
"Give me liberty or give me death."
"English coming," warning ride.
Things revered now tossed aside.

Thomas Jefferson turned knave,
fresh dirt thrown into his grave.
Lots of blame to go around:
so much lost; so little found.

Citizens left in the cold.
Congress putting them on hold.
(Keepers of one dream: their own.)
Unity stripped to the bone.

Cynicism honed as art,
curling into every heart,
smothering the hope within.
Are we out or are we in?

Shall we sing or shall we sigh?
Will our glory pass us by?

I sincerely hope it will not pass us by.
Our nation's strength is her citizens.
And this American is all the way in.

Happy Independence Day!

    i will admit to being quite cynical of our current political situation...the two party system stymies any opposition or third party choice and the current parties are firmly entrenched well beyond the typical citizen...and with special interest groups...

    i have not lost hope, but am quite frustrated...

    Lots to think about here, Sue. For sure America's strength is in its citizens.

    I fear that too many Americans have never learned to think (this is true of Canadians too, by the way) and that many hop onto bandwagons without realizing the consequences. If I thought people living in democracies were REALLY exercising their right to vote (which includes looking at ALL angles of the questions) then I would be happier to accept their choices.

    Sue, thanks for this lovely poem. I love this country so much and it hurts to see all the negative things that go on. I pray we will keep our land free; it is our promised land.

    I can't sing our National Anthem without getting teary, or watch how reverently our Boy Scouts honor the flag without feeling great pride in our country. I'm sad to see generations raised with an entitlement mentality. I don't want to have fear for my Grandkid's future. The citizens of this country really do need to step up their game.Never underestimate the power of ONE!

    So beautifully written and so very true.
    Like a lot of others in this country I am very frustrated but still trying to keep the faith in our Nation Under God will prevail.
    How is Darlene doing? I feel bad I have not visited with either of you in a while.
