On Art and Artists

Musician in the Rain by Robert Doisneau

On Art and Artists
©2014 Susan Noyes Anderson

Never keep your art too safe and warm;
it isn't right.
Abandon it to sleet and hale;
strip it in harsh sunlight.
Ignite in on an open flame.
Pierce it with jagged ice.
Beat it; break it; brand it.
Splay it raw, as sacrifice.
Seize pen or chisel, brush or bow,
but let creation be.
Art cannot move or breathe until
the artist sets it free.

  4. I have a hard time letting people read something I wrote..prose or poetry because it's exposing a special part of myself that I'm not sure I want criticized! Except my blog posts..but that's not really art! But I do understand the hesitation to set ones art free. Maybe that's what sets the true artist apart from the rest of the population. The willingness to take the risk.

  9. Interesting though that "Art cannot move or breathe until the artist sets it free." Something to ponder!

  12. It isn't really true art if it doesn't have a piece of the artist captured inside, is it? Some of that true or raw emotion. Much like your poetry! Stunning as always.

  15. Too true, Sue , the modern new age propensity towards " white light only " , unwittingly serves to make the darkness unimaginably powerful , and the evidence is around us for all to see.....its scary , but it must be dealt with , ha ha , the world according to Kutamun

  24. Great art always has a piece of the artist infused into it somewhere. Sometimes it isn't pretty, but other times it can make your spirit soar - especially when you can relate to the message. We all like to feel connected - even when it isn't pretty. Thanks for making the time to come see us in the city - we had a great evening!
