In Defense of Weeds

©1993 by Susan Noyes Anderson
I’d like to say a word for weeds,
brave victims of mad plowers.
Why must their sturdy lives give way

to frail, elitist flowers?

  1. Weed flowers are beautiful, but rarely get praise and admiration!

I had to let my grass grow for a while now, in defense of weeds ;-)

  2. JDaniel has told me his yard will be full of weeds when he grows up. He thinks they have the prettiest flowers.

  4. In the desert, the weeds make the most beautiful flowers I've ever seen. I like them better than the flowers I plant.

  7. One of my neighbors decided to grow native flowers in her yard. The HOA made her take them out, saying that they were WEEDS! Some people just don't get it. Great post, Sue.

  8. Hey friend, I remember doing a weed thing for Saturday Centus one time...there are weeds and then there are weeds. I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder, eh?

Yours is the only blog I'm stopping to visit...and only oh so briefly...but couldn't resist the need to say hi. Thanks for posting for me last week. Love ya.

  11. Hi Sue,

Aren't weeds annoying little things? I have what they call Creeping Charlie in my lawn and hate it. Great "W" word.

  12. I really don't like the leaves of dandelions. They are scratchy and thorny. Their flowers aren't bad though... {:-Deb

  13. Some "weeds" give the prettiest flowers, so I only have "weeded" the ones in my previous yard that take over the other plants! I like what Daniel's mom said about her son!

  14. Hah! Those sturdy weeds don't give up to the flowers very easily...and they always make an encore! My fav ones are the little violets that grow in my grass. I'm always sad to mow those down.

  15. Okay, that was funny. I don't like weeds but one of my very best friends does. She and her husband have a weed company--as in they kill them. So she loves seeing them in people's yards as it means business will soon be booming for them.

I was reading some of your other posts. I absolutely loved your comment "if you can't move the mountain, own the climb!" I think I need to get that translated into Spanish!

  17. If it weren't for weeds, we wouldn't have our beautiful wild flowers here in the desert. If they bloom in my yard, the gardeners think they are regular plants and they never pull them, so I have a few of them and I don't mind.

  18. Weeds are like the drunk guest at a party. They look pretty at first, but then they get really obnoxious and refuse to leave.

  19. some weeds are really quite lovely and interesting. chicory and spiderwort come to mind. a field of yellow buttercups! really, weeds are just flowers that grew up in the wrong place!

  20. Sue,
My lawn is mostly weeds and moss. At least when they are mowed they kind of look like grass LOL!

  21. Dear Sue,

Not sure I agree, but it makes me feel better when they get overwhelming...

  30. Ha ha, oh I wish that were true but unfortunately here in the South, the weeds are wicked! I can pull weeds one day and the next day they return and bring friends with them! :)

  31. I like how small children cannot tell the difference between weeds and flowers...and see beauty in both.

  32. With pictures like those, who cannot like a weed?
