Coconut Oil: Elixir of the Gods

Oh boy, have I got a juicy little tidbit of a tip for you!

The latest and biggest news from natural health guru Dr. Mercola is that the best kind of fat any human being could ever consume is extra virgin coconut oil. Supposedly, this choice is an even better one than olive oil purports to be, as the coconut byproduct stays healthy both cold and heated.

Nutiva extra virgin coconut oil is the brand that comes most highly recommended, and I just received mine in the mail. Here's a little preview of their spiel about the benefits:

"Coconut oil is about 50 percent lauric acid, a rare medium-chain fatty acid found in mother's milk that supports healthy metabolism and is now being studied for its anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial, health-protecting properties. Overall, coconut oil contains 92% saturated fats, and only 1% Omega-6, the fat Americans get way too much of."

(Okay, so they ended the sentence in a preposition. That doesn't mean the science is bad, right?)

So far I have used this lovely stuff to scramble my eggs and moisturize my lips. I'm waiting to see how putting it in my hair goes. And I'm dying to find out if their claim that the lauric acid assists in weight loss could possibly be true!

It does taste really light and buttery on the eggs; that's for sure. And it smells wonderful.

Elixir of the gods? Maybe so!

I'll let ya know...

;)

PS. I think I will leave Nutiva's hemp products alone...heehee

  1. Last week I watched several videos of a case study about coconut oil. Apparently, I think it's 3 T a day, can actually slow down and even reverse Alzheimer's to a certain degree. I never thought of checking out what Mercola has to say about this, but now that you mentioned it, I will. Thanks for doing some of my homework, on what brand is best. The only thing that is stopping me from trying it so far is I have heard it is controversial. So I want to find out why...then I am going to order the same kind you have!

  2. I like to pop popcorn in it. Soooo yummy. I think I will try it with my eggs and maybe anything else that I would normally use oil for.
I like to sear my roasts before I cook them. Generally I use shortening, although that is the ONLY thing I use shortening for. I wonder if coconut oil would work. I bet it would!

  3. Interesting. I need an explanation of the hair, though. I could be convinced.
And btw--when we got our new computer 6 weeks ago, I lost all my addresses. If ya want those scrumptious cookies, I'll need a place to send them!

  4. I made a protein bar recipe a couple of weeks ago and coconut oil is what they said to use. I didn't like the taste, but from what I've been hearing it's the new 'thing' to cook with! I have another recipe I'll have to make this week since YOU recommend coconut oil.. I'll let you know.. and that part about the 'preposition' hahaha gave me the chuckle of the day! I mean what kind of a copy writer does that?

  5. I love coconut oil! I have been using it for a little while, and just knowing how much better it is for me makes me so happy. Though to a pregnant nose, it was not good. :)

  6. Isn't unsaturated fat really bad for anyone? I absolutely love coconut milk used in my cooking. It is so delicious. Ill bet the oil product tastes good too. Is it not available in local stores? I'll be interested to know more.

  16. So....on the weight loss thing..does that mean you're supposed to rub it all over the fatty parts of the body? In that case, I'll have to take a bath in it! :D

  19. Everything good you hear about coconut oil is true. I love it and we use it for everything. I even make a
"tea" for sore throats using hot water a teaspoon of coconut oil and lemon. Really good. Also raw (unpasteurized) butter is a really healthy fat we like to use too.

  20. I ordered mine from the Nutiva store directly, using the link in my post, Caroline. It's possible that the stuff is sold at health food stores, too, but I don't know for certain.
